It is a crisp autumn morning, overcast skies hinting at inclement weather to come. You stand upon the road- effectively a dirt path, really- that leads to the remote town of Weirwater. South of the great expanse of the Crentwood Forest, Weirwater is little more than a provincial afterthought, a shabby settlement built on the shores of the lake it takes its name from, and the destination of your journey.
Your liege lord, the Duke of Crentwood, has sent you to investigate a killing that bears the hallmarks of a werewolf attack. As the duchy's foremost expert in supernatural beasts, your task is to figure out who or what is behind the killing, and render a judgement.
Do not fail.

The Town of Weirwater
Giving upA Frigid Reception
You arrive in Weirwater to no fanfare. The few residents out cast suspicious glances at you as you pass, then return to their business. Places like these are close-knit and don't take well to outsiders, an attitude only heightened by the recent killing. You eventually find yourself in the town square, silent and empty. You are not sure if it's always this quiet, or if the townsfolk are merely cloistered out of fear.
After a short time a stout gentleman emerges from the least modest of the modest houses lining the square and goes to greet you. He introduces himself as Henrik, the town burgermeister. He summarizes what is known about the killing to you.
Decision 1Game Over: Imprisoned
You decide that you have no interest in pursuing more supernatural monsters or talking to uneducated country bumpkins, so you turn around and make your way back to your home just outside the city of Crentwood. After a day of travel, you arrive at your humble cottage and go to bed early.
Unfortunately, your dereliction of duty has upset the Duke of Crentwood. Upon learning you never even arrived at Weirwater, the Duke dispatches armed guards to your home, who arrest you and throw you into the castle dungeons, until such a time that the Duke deems fit.
And it is here that your story ends.
OpeningA Brutal Killing
Burgermeister Henrik runs through the details of the killing- the victim, Ragvald Burke, was found dead yesterday morning in a woodshed at the edge of town, a place where the Crentwood looms large. His stomach had been clawed apart, and the door to the woodshed had been closed, leading the townsfolk to suspect a werewolf had done the deed. Henrik continues on that there are three persons of interest- Matilde Brynhelm, whose inn the woodshed sits behind; Drik Ustenfell, a woodsman who frequents that area of the forest, and Alka Mistmar, the town's fletcher, who discovered the body. As he concludes, the burgermeister looks up to the sky.
"Storm's coming. You won't have long to do your investigating."
It's true. You'll have to conduct your investigation quickly and manage your time accordingly. Once the storm is upon you, your investigation will be at an end.
Travel to the Crime Scene
Meeting the Witnesses
To the Woodshed
You decide it is best to investigate the place of the killing first, before the scene becomes further disturbed. A day has already passed since the body was discovered, and who knows what may have gone on in the intervening time. You make your way towards the north edge of town, where the ancient trees of the Crentwood cast long shadows, and the houses grow more ramshackle. Since the first settlers arrived here, people have been losing the fight against the Crentwood, and each year the forest grows closer and closer- or so you were told before you left for this remote locale.
Finally you pass the inn you know to be owned by Matilde Brynhelm, and you see nestled amongst the trees a small wooden shack. This is the place. The air is heavy- whether it is the impending storm or something more, you do not know.
Crime Scene 1Who to Meet First?
You decide it is best to interview the persons of interest sooner rather than later, to catch them while their memories are fresh. But now the matter remains- who shall you speak with first? You think on those the burgermeister outlined- Matilde Brynhelm, the innkeeper, whose inn the killing took place behind; Dirk Ustenfell, the woodsman, who frequents the area; and Alka Mistmar, the fletcher, who found the body. You're not certain what help, if any, they may be able to provide, but it's better than nothing.

"We don't get many passing through these parts. I take it yer here about the killing?" She inquires, which you answer with a nod. The woman's face darkens a bit.
"Ask yer questions then. I'll say what I can, but don't test me patience. I take it you gathered it, but I'm Matilde, the innkeeper."
Now you may begin your interrogation in earnest, but you have limited time to question her.

It does not help that the poor man's bowels have been ripped apart. You turn away for a moment and hold back a retch. You steel yourself and face the scene again.
The corpse of Ragvald Burke is slumped against a pile of chopped logs. Blood is everywhere. There is much you need to examine, and only so much time.

While these markings are certainly deeper than one might expect from a regular wolf, they are not quite as large or as deep as you've seen from werewolf attacks.
You peer closer at the cuts, hoping to find //something// that can point you in the correct direction. Yet there is no fur left in the wounds, no bite marks, nothing that might give you a concrete idea of what you're dealing with. You know that when werewolves kill, it is typically to feed. Given that none of the intestines appear to be consumed, you wonder if perhaps this isn't the work of something other than a werewolf. Could it be that the creature was interrupted before it could feed? But if that was the case, why isn't there a witness?
You consider a more sinister possibility- could this merely be a murder disguised as a werewolf killing? There's no reason this sort of damage //couldn't// have been done by a person with a knife. But if that were the case, the savagery on display is... disconcerting.

You raise yourself to a standing position and tilt your head. To the best of your knowledge, such a creature has never been encountered before, but you recall reading a treatise theorizing their existence. This will make your investigation more difficult though. If it is a child, they will no doubt have adults sheltering them. You must trudge ahead though, regardless of what difficulties lay ahead. Who to Speak with Next?
You leave Matilde's inn and take a moment to consider your options. You could speak with Alka, the fletcher, who discovered the body, or Dirk, the woodsman who frequents that area. Both have potential, but you only have time to speak with one (if: $time is 1)[,as you still need to survey the scene of the killing.](if: $time is 2)[for the storm will make consulting with both difficult before nightfall. The rain has only intensified since you entered the inn.]
Meeting Dirk
Meeting AlkaThe Heavens Open
You make your way towards the woodshed, your head full of questions, seemingly nowhere closer to an answer regarding Ragvald's death. Hopefully examining the body and scene of the killing will give you a better picture of matters. As you travel, thunder shakes the ground, and lightning flashes across the sky, preceeding a light rain. Thankfully, you are able to reach the woodshed without getting terribly soaked. At the door, you take a moment to steady yourself, prepared for the carnage that almost certainly awaits you inside.
Enter the woodshed
(set: $time to $time + 1)A startling revelation
You are taken aback by Matilde's... confession? Is she suggesting a child is the werewolf you're looking for? You could pursue this truly remarkable lead and consult with Alka, the fletcher. But if you suspect this is a distraction, that would keep you from talking with Dirk, the woodsman. You only have time to check up on one of the two- you still must investigate the scene of the killing.
Meeting Alka
Meeting Dirk Not Enough Time
You are stunned at Matilde's revelation that Alka is sheltering a child who could be a werewolf- at least that's what you suspect she's getting at. Unfortunately, you do not have the time required to speak with the fletcher- the storm above you seems ready to burst, and you //must// investigate the scene of the killing before the weather makes it impossible.
Regretfully, you make your way away from Matilde's inn, and in the direction of the woodshed.
Proceed to the scene of the killingThe Heavens Open
You are headed for the woodshed when a great rumble of thunder shakes the ground, and lightning flashes through the sky, moments before rain drops begin falling. Thankfully, The storm isn't terribly heavy just yet, and you are able to make it to the woodshed before you get thoroughly soaked. Before you enter, you think on what you learned- that a child, perhaps, was behind whatever you are about to witness. You shall determine if that is actually the case.

The fletcher rolls their eyes at your question.
"Does it need explaining? I went to the woodshed to get materials for more arrows. Of course, I wasn't expecting Ragvald's corpse. I suppose it was unpleasant in a visceral sense, but I was not displeased to see the man dead. I'm not too bothered though; we live on the edge of the Crentwood, which is filled with wild animals. I'm more shocked this sort of thing doesn't happen more often."
Alka turns their focus to their work once again; you are losing whatever small bit of their attention you had is rapidly slipping away. Your next question will probably be your last before you lose them entirely. Still, their blasé attitude towards the brutal killing disturbs you.

Alka gives you a puzzled look.
"I don't understand. What does it matter? He's dead, why do you care? But if you must know- an awful man. Greedy, vain, lecherous- pick a fault, he probably had it. Yet, the burgermeister loved him, which is why his death matters any. I think most of the people in town would agree, it's a net positive that the wretch is dead. And whoever- sorry, //what//ever did him in did this town a service. And I'd perhaps keep it to yourself that you're investigating Ragvald's death. Some folks may want it left well enough alone."
You're somewhat taken aback at the vitriol with which the fletcher speaks about Ragvald- the poor man was torn apart, surely nothing he did in life justified that sort of death? And at the end there, was that... a threat? You notice Alka refocusing on their work; you probably only have time for one more question before you lose their attention entirely.

And at the end there, was that... a threat? With this question though, you have entirely lost Alka, with the fletcher now ignoring you completely as they return entirely to the arrows they are crafting.

You proceed after the fletcher into the back of their workshop, which is a small living space. Sitting on the floor, playing with some carved wooden toys, is a young girl, probably no more than ten years old. At your entry she rises and gives a little curtsy.
"Elha, cut that out. Matilde's been teaching her 'proper' manners, but I've told her there's no need for that sort of thing. She can greet you however she wants. Anyway, this is 'the child' you were told about. She was out last night, playing around behind Matilde's inn or something of the sort, when as I understand Ragvald happened upon her. He'd been drinking and started rambling on about how 'children ought to know their place' and tried to beat her. He was a truly horrible person. I guess Elha... well, maybe I should let her tell the story herself."
Alka turns to Elha and gives her a nod to indicate she should speak.

The girl, Elha, begins to speak, hesitantly at first, and then growing in confidence as her story goes on.
"Like Alka was saying, I was just... playing out by the woodshed, like I usually do. I know I was out later than I was supposed to be, after the sun had set, and the moon was high in the sky. And Mr. Burke, he, he, he just came up to me and started yelling and pushing me, and I kept telling him to stop, but he wouldn't listen, and I... I don't know what happened, exactly, but I got so scared, and so mad and, and, and it was like I... I just lost control! And then it was like, I wasn't me! But I was still me? It's weird. But I was bigger than I am now, but still smaller than Mr. Burke, but I had claws and I think I had fur? Anyway, I was just so mad, and Mr. Burke he started screaming and ran into the woodshed, and I followed him, I was //so mad//. And I don't remember much of what happened next, but the next thing I remember it was morning, and Alka and Ms. Matilde were carrying me into the inn. And yeah... I guess that's it? Alka told me not to tell anyone about this, but I guess it's okay now, since I'm telling you!"
Despite the horrific naturre of the story, Elha has returned to a somewhat cheery demeanor by the end of it. Alka glares at the child.
"It is //not// okay now! It's still a secret. You mustn't tell anyone else. But thank you Elha, we'll leave you be now."

"Look, I know what Elha did was wrong. But please, I'm begging you, show some mercy for her. She's just a child, she didn't know what she was doing. I'm certain I- and not just me, Dirk and Matilde- can raise her into an upstanding young girl, help her control her transformations. I know I am asking a lot of you, but please, she deserves more out of life. I know you probably need to think more of this, I won't ask you for an answer now. Just... consider it."
With that, the fletcher lets you go, and you exit back to the streets of Weirwater. A child werewolf, who acted in self-defense, but with no control... It's all so much to consider. You need to clear your head. Perhaps investigating the scene of the killing will lend matters additional clarity.

You know that when werewolves kill, it is typically to feed. Given that none of the intestines appear to be consumed, you wonder if perhaps this isn't the work of something other than a werewolf. Dirk grits his teeth as you make your declaration. He stares at you for a long while, and you begin to wonder if he might not have heard you over the rain. As you open your mouth to repeat what you said, Dirk finally speaks.
"What in god's name are ye talkin' about? Child werewolf, ain't no such thing in these parts, nay, no such thing in any parts. Yer ravin' mad. I knew no good would ever come from callin' in yuppies like yerself. Ye ain't nothing but a lackey paid to put good townsfolk in the ground for things done by animals. With this, Dirk throws his ax to the ground and marches into the tavern, leaving you alone in the rain. Apparently, this was not the right course of action to take with Dirk.

I'm certain I- and not just me, Dirk and Matilde- can raise her into an upstanding young girl, help her control her transformations. <img src="https://raltshunter.github.io/ClawsOfTheWeirwater/artAssets/Elha.png" width="500" height="500">
The evidence is undeniable. Elha, the sweet little girl, is a werewolf. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever encountered before- all the other werewolves you’ve seen were grown men and women, sometimes ragged, wild people living in the wilderness, other times they were ravenous and crazed in the poorer parts of towns and cities. Your duty to the Duke demands you kill this child, if not just for the fact that she is a werewolf, but also for the fact she has already killed. And yet, she acted in self-defense, transforming in a moment of desperation, killing a man who threatened to beat her, a man hated by the whole of the town. In her child’s mind, she had done nothing wrong- indeed, to many in the town, she had done nothing wrong.
You know in the depths of your heart, you cannot sentence this girl to death. Beyond even your own morals, who knows how this small town would react to the decision to sentence a child to death. And so you concoct a story to hide the girl’s secret. You let the burgermeister know that Ragvald Burke, a man hated by almost all in the community, just happened to be mauled by a bear in the night, and that the forests ought to be better patrolled. The burgermeister is both disappointed and pleased- there is no culprit for him to blame, but also no supernatural beast stalking his town.
<img src="https://raltshunter.github.io/ClawsOfTheWeirwater/artAssets/town.png" width="500" height="500">
And with that, you take your leave, as the rain lets up and darkness begins to fall. You do not know what will become of Elha; perhaps the townsfolk who know her secret will raise her well, and help her avoid the fate that befalls others in her position. After a long night’s journey, you return to the Duke of Crentwood. You are congratulated for your work, despite the lack of werewolves, and the matter is considered closed. You can only hope it stays that way.
And for now, your story ends.
OpeningA Grave Mistake
The evidence is undeniable. The little girl, Elha, is a werewolf. Though she did not choose this fate for herself, you cannot simply let this go. You know how her story will inevitably end: just like the wild men and women you’ve found living in the forest, little more than feral beasts, driven mad by the creature that they become. Indeed, she has already killed- admittedly, one could argue it an act of defense, but the savagery in her actions is undeniable. A future act of violence, one against someone less deserving, is an inevitability. You fill yourself with resolve for what must be done: the girl must die.
You make your way to the burgermeister and explain the situation to him. Despite your protestations that the matter should be handled quietly, the burgermeister sends word to gather the whole town together in the square. Within an hour, the whole of the town stands outside the burgermeister’s house, staring expectantly at you and the burgermeister. In the gathered crowd, less than one hundred people, you spot Matilde, Dirk, and Alka, with Elha nestled in their midst. You can see the fear on their faces, and wonder if perhaps you aren’t making a mistake. It is too late to turn back though, as the burgermeister proclaims to the town that Elha is to be executed for the murder of Ragvald Burke. With that, all hell breaks loose.
Putting a child’s head on a spike for an action most of the town considered a service is simply too much. The crowd, furious, charges you and the burgermeister, drowning you in a flurry of fists. There will be blood for the death of Ragvald- that of you and the burgermeister. You take blow after blow, until no part of you is unscathed, and hear the screams of the burgermeister as the crowd tears him apart. Eventually, the frenzy dies, and you lay upon the cold ground, the life fading from your limbs. The last thing you see, as the rain lets up and darkness begins to fall, is Elha’s sobbing face looking down at you, before Matilde and Alka lead her away.
<img src="https://raltshunter.github.io/ClawsOfTheWeirwater/artAssets/town_darker.png" width="500" height="500">
And so your story ends.
OpeningA Convincing Alternative
You find yourself in the midst of a conundrum. You are almost certain that the killer is a child werewolf. And yet, you have no further leads to go on. While Weirwater is not exactly a populous town, there are still too many children to potentially investigate. You would wear out the welcome of the burgermeister and the townsfolk long before you could figure out which child is the one you seek. In times past, a lord might have called for the execution of every child in the town. Thankfully, that is no longer the case. And yet, the Duke is still expecting results from you.
You decide to concoct a story for the burgermeister: Ragvald Burke was killed by a bear roaming the Crentwood. Until the beast is found, the townsfolk should lock their doors, and not travel unaccompanied at night. While this is a lie, the advice you have given should help keep the people safe from the beast. And should the actual werewolf ever be caught, you will be long gone. Perhaps if things had gone differently, you might have been able to catch the beast yourself. But for now you must content yourself with the little good you can do.
<img src="https://raltshunter.github.io/ClawsOfTheWeirwater/artAssets/town.png" width="500" height="500">
With this advice imparted, you make your way out of town, as the rain lets up, and darkness begins to fall. You have a long night’s journey before you are back home, traveling along the dirt road that runs parallel to the Crentwood. As the night grows darker and darker, you cannot help but fixate on the trees that rise up alongside you. Out here, at the very edge of civilization, it all feels so tenuous, like the great unknown could swallow all of mankind with ease and in an instant. With the unresolved questions of your task weighing on you still, you know it will be a long time before you can sleep well.
But for now, your story ends.

Any time someone dies in a suspicious manner in a remote town like this, the townsfolk are liable to attribute it to some sort of supernatural beast, whether it be a werewolf, an empusa, or a strigoi. While that does sometimes end up being the case, this has turned out like many of the other matters you’ve looked into, with a mere man the killer. You have good reason to believe Dirk Ustenfell murdered Ragvald Burke. As a woodsman who frequented the area of the killing, Dirk has the likely experience required to make the killing look like that of an animal- or in this case, a werewolf. It was foolish to assume there was something supernatural at play here; everything else you’ve learned is a distraction. There is a simple murderer afoot.
But, this is a small town, likely close-knit. In accusing Dirk of being a murderer, your actions could have far-reaching consequences- it might even turn the town against you. Perhaps it is better to have some discretion, attribute this killing to something other than a person, or a werewolf. A wild bear, you suppose, could be responsible for such a killing. Yes, that should assuage the townsfolk, give them something to fixate upon. You find the burgermeister and inform him that Ragvald died at the claws of a bear- he might have provoked it somehow, or maybe he was just unlucky. Whatever the case, you advise the woods be better patrolled, and that the townsfolk maintain caution after dark. The burgermeister seems somewhat disappointed- he was hoping for someone he could stick the blame on, but this will do, he supposes.
Before you leave town, you seek out Dirk Ustenfell. You find him as the rain is starting to let up and darkness is beginning to fall. You let the woodsman know you know what he did, but you’ve decided to let the matter pass. He reacts initially with confusion, before giving you a knowing nod- he seems to appreciate your decision, and assures you nothing of the sort will happen again, before wishing you well on your return journey.

Your feelings on this matter are strong, and you make your way to the burgermeister, where you relay the results of your investigation. The burgermeister is pleased with your speedy resolution, and summons two burly townsfolk to apprehend Dirk. After a short while, the burgermeister’s men have returned with Dirk, who put up no resistance.
