(text-colour:magenta)[''Ianthe's Trial'']
A Game by Alethea Saliba
[[Start->Awakening]]
//Copyright Alethea Saliba, 2022. All Rights Reserved.//(text-colour:orange)[''Morning'']
You awaken, and know that today is potentially the last full day you will spend as a free woman. You are Ianthe, [[the Prytanis of Gatebridge]], and you are accused of crimes against [[the state of Araxthia and the Eternal City]]. Tomorrow you will stand trial before the Overking and [[his court of justiciars]]. Today, however, you have time to walk the Eternal City and speak with the various expert witnesses who are slated to testify.
[[Head into the city->Scene setting]]
(text-colour:purple)[''Your Role'']
You serve as the Prytanis, a position akin to mayor, of the town of Gatebridge. Located south of the Eternal City, Gatebridge sits astride the Red River and serves as an important waystation for goods moving from the capital onward to the rest of the kingdom. As Prytanis, you have broad discretion when it comes to prosecuting crimes and levying taxes.
[[Return->Awakening]] (text-colour:purple)[''The Kingdom'']
This is Araxthia, both the kingdom and the continent it encompasses, and its capital is the Eternal City. Araxthia is ruled by the Overking, who created the world when he awoke from a cosmic dream, and who resides in a diamond tower at the heart of the Eternal City. The Overking gives the people of the kingdom broad freedom to do as they please, and only directly intervenes during times of great crisis; much of the day-to-day work of running the kingdom is handled by a highly ordered bureacracy headed by the immortal Archon the Mage.
[[Return->Awakening]] (text-colour:purple)[''The Court'']
Normally, most crimes are tried in the locality they were committed in, overseen by one of the kingdom's many travelling justiciars. However, the potential severity of your crimes has warranted a convening of a high trial in the capital: five hundred justiciars will hear your case and vote on your guilt. Should there be a tie, the Overking will cast the deciding vote.
[[Return->Awakening]] (text-colour:orange)[''The Eternal City'']
You emerge from your quarters and take a look around: although it is still early morning, the city is already bustling, its cobbled streets full of merchants and laborers going about their business. Guards from the city's militia patrol the streets, and over the tops of houses you spy the Tower of the Overking, a structure wrought entirely of diamond. You pause for a moment and [[consider the crime you stand accused of]].(text-colour:orange)[''Your Crime'']
You stand accused of violating the Treaty of the Mages, one of the bedrock pieces of Araxthian law. At the end of [[the Mage Wars]], the Overking brokered the treaty to bring peace between the warring factions. As part of the treaty, it was agreed that magic may only be taught to non-native practioners under the supervision of the Araxthian College of Magic. It is said that you provided financial support and protection to a coterie of rogue mages who sought to violate this clause and instruct any and all they could in the ways of magic.
Whether or not you actually violated the Treaty of the Mages, though, remains to be seen.
[[Consider the Expert Witnesses-> Witness Choice 1]](text-colour:purple)[''The Mage Wars'']
Near the beginning of recorded history, multiple factions of Araxthian mages engaged in a massive civil war regarding the position of mages in Araxthian society, which magic should be practiced, and how it should be taught. The Mage Wars ravaged Araxthia, and so far represent the first and only large-scale civil conflict in the kingdom's history. Despite occurring over 1500 years ago, it remains a dark reminder of how fragile the kingdom's peace and prosperity are.
[[Return->consider the crime you stand accused of]] (text-colour:orange)[''The First Witness'']
You recall who has been summoned to speak on your case. There is Sappho, the Chief Rector of the Araxthian College of Magic; Harmodius, a captain of the Eternal City Militia; Aspasia, a scholar and expert on Araxthian law; and Cyrus, a magistrate who investigates rogue mages routinely. Each of their testimonies could greatly influence the verdict.
The Eternal City is large, so you will likely only have time to speak with a couple of the expert witnesses before you must return to your quarters for the evening. As such, you must choose who you speak with carefully.

You make your way through the city towards the headquarters of the Eternal City Militia, a brick structure near the city's walls. On your arrival, a junior militiawoman escorts you to the refectory, where Harmodius sits alone, with an untouched bowl of stew. He is younger than you expected, clad in fine garb more fitting an aristocrat than a soldier. He nods at you in greeting as you take a seat across from him.
"Greetings, Prytanis. I thought you might visit us here at the militia. I have to say, I feel somewhat conflicted about my role in your upcoming trial. You see, while I am obliged to enforce the laws of our fine kingdom, your way of thinking intrigues me."

You meander through winding streets to an unimposing stone building- this is the city library, where copies of the kingdom's histories, treatises, and novels are stored. You go inside and look for the section on legal documents- it is here that you find Aspasia, who sits at a desk, furiously writing notes on an ancient scroll with a quill. She is a young woman, dressed rather elegantly. You approach and quietly introduce yourself, and Aspasia gestures for you to take a seat opposite her. She addresses you in a whisper.
"Prytanis Ianthe, I am so glad that you made time to see me. I have some choice thoughts regarding your alleged activities, and I am rather eager to discuss them with you. Of course, anything we say here is purely academic and, short of a written confession, I will take nothing we say here as an admission of guilt."

You cross the city to the neighborhood of the city jail. The jail is an imposing structure, made of dark stone and covered in moss, and it is surrounded by memorials to those lost in various wars and tragedies. You make your way into the jail and ask around for Cyrus, and after a short time someone is able to lead you to him, strolling through rows of cells. Cyrus is well-built, handsome in a rugged way, and he wears the simple tunic favored by magistrates who travel frequently. When he greets you, his voice is deep but gentle.
"Prytanis Ianthe, it is a pleasure to meet you at last. I must say, your actions have certainly made my work more interesting in recent weeks. I suppose you're here about my testimony tomorrow. Unfortunately for you, I am not like the others who are to testify- I care about the laws, as they are written. No matter your reasons, breaking the law makes you a criminal."

It's hard to read the rector's face, but it appears Sappho is staring at you with something approximating pity.
"My dear, if you had come to me before this whole affair with the rogue mages- and don't deny it with me, it will get you nowhere- it could have been entirely avoided. You see, magic is wild and chaotic at the best of times. The College exists as a neutral space with appropriate safeguards. The first and most powerful Araxthian mage was the Master of Death. Immortal, he served as the chief advisor of the Overking, until his mysterious disappearance nearly 600 years ago. At the conclusion of the Mage Wars, the Master established the Necromages' Guild- so named for his ability to raise the dead- to render aid to the commonfolk of Araxthia; most towns have a branch of the guild. After the Master's disappearance, Archon the Mage has become the defacto head of the guild.

You are not chained- they have afforded you that dignity- but you are frogmarched through the city streets, and passersby stop and stare. Soon, the diamond Tower of the Overking looms before you. The room is grand- along the far side of the room are massive raised benches, upon which sit the 500 justiciars who will hear your case. Sitting amongst them, as if he were just another man, is the Overking, clad in turquoise robes decorated in arabesque patterns. Upon his head sits his famous glass crown, which is set with opals.
In the center of the room are two adjacent lecterns, facing the benches. One is where you will stand for the duration of the trial, and the other is where the witnesses will testify. Near the entrance are tables and chairs where record-keepers meticulously log the goings-on of the court.

After some time has passed, the Overking rises from his seat, and the conversation in the courtroom dies immediately. Despite his commanding presence, the Overking is surprisingly slight, looking more like a librarian than a god-king. He clears his throat, and addresses the court.
"Let the high trial of Ianthe, Prytanis of Gatebridge, for crimes against the state of Araxthia and the Eternal City, be now called to order. As is custom, her fate shall be decided by a jury of 500 justiciars from all across the land. Should there be a tie, only then will I cast a vote, for my voice is no greater than that of our people.
"Ianthe stands accused of aiding a cabal of mages who deliberately acted in violation of the Treaty of the Mages. Of her involvement in these actions, there is no doubt- the mages themselves have provided testimony. However, as Ianthe is not a mage, this trial shall determine whether or not her actions are warranting of punishment. Cyrus departs the courtroom, still not deigning to look at you. The justiciars are silent, not for lack of anything to say, but from shock. Even the Overking's ever-neutral expression lets slip the slightest arched eyebrow. You hold the lectern to steady yourself.

The Overking silences any remaining talk in the court by raising his hand.
"We thank Magistrate Cyrus for his time and testimony. That concludes the testimony we are slated to hear. Now, the court would like to give Prytanis Ianthe the opportunity to make a statement."
You swallow nervously, and prepare to give your final defense.
[["I would like to thank the court for their time. I understand my actions have caused no small degree of difficulty, and I apologize for taking your time in this way. [["This trial has been a terrible waste of time. I have done nothing wrong. No one can point to an actual law I have broken. It does not say in the Treaty of Mages that there can only be one school to teach non-mages magic. I am being prosecuted for daring to question the exisiting hierarchies of our kingdom. Many of the justiciars nod at your remarks, seemingly pleased with your measured response. The Overking steps forward once more.
"Thank you for your statement Prytanis. It was good to hear your side of things. The justiciars will now depart to cast their votes. I ask that you remain here though, this should be quick."
The justiciars now leave the room, filing past you.

Your statement has whipped the justiciars into a frenzy, many of them shouting curses at you. The Overking whirls to face them.
"''Enough!'' You will comport yourselves with dignity, or you will be stripped of your positions." This silences the justiciars, though a number of them still scowl at you. The Overking turns his attention to you again.
"My apologies, Prytanis. Your remarks were... unexpected. Regardless, thank you. The justiciars will now depart to cast their votes. Please remain here, this should be quick." The justiciars now leave the room, filing past you.
[[Await the response->Deliberation]](text-colour:red)[''A Confession'']
The Overking halts the proceedings and gestures for you to speak. You begin:
"I acted recklessly. I thought I was doing good, but I was ignorant of too many factors. I didn't contemplate just how far the consequences of my actions could go. During my time here in the city, I have met with people of substantial knowledge, and I have seen the error of my ways. I was wrong to do what I did, and I was wrong to contest matters here in court. I ask for nothing other than your leniency in my sentencing."
The Overking contemplates your words for a moment, then decides your fate:
"Ianthe, I am pleased with your contrition, I do not often do such things, but I shall assert my status as ruler of this kingdom- I accept your declaration of guilt, and will grant your request of leniency. I hereby sentence you to ten years of confinement, at the prison in the Archipelago of the Rising Sun. At completion of your sentence, you will be rewelcomed into the kingdom with open arms, one of us again. This trial is concluded."
You bow to the Overking in thanks, and he bows to you in turn. The justiciars look somewhat disappointed, robbed of the opportunity to vote on your fate. Guards approach and prompt you to follow them.
[[Your Fate->Prison Ending]](text-colour:orange)[''The Sun and the Sand'']
The next week is a whirlwhind. You meet with Archon the Mage, who personally assures you that your possessions will be protected by the kingdom, and returned to you on your release. You are brought to the port at Gullpoint and board a small prison ship, sailing east. The islands of the Archipelago of the Rising Sun are sun-drenched and idyllic, kept warm by tropical breezes. The prison you are confined in is small, but well kept. From the window of your cell you can see the beach and hear the waves.
The Overking could have thrown you into any number of dark dungeons or dank pits, but selected this one, perhaps the nicest in the kingdom. It is hard to guess at his reasons. Whatever they may be, you best make yourself comfortable- you'll be here a while.
[[Thus Ends Your Journey->Title Card]](text-colour:red)[''The Verdict Arrives'']
After several tense minutes, a scribe arrives in the courtroom, carrying a parchment with the results of the justiciars' vote. The scribe personally delivers it to the Overking, who takes a moment to read over the results. When finished, he looks at you.
"Ianthe."

"You have been found innocent by a majority of the justiciars, and as such all charges against you are to be stricken from the record. You are free to go about your business, and return to your position as Prytanis of Gatebridge. I wish you well."
You've done it, you're free! You make your way out of the courtroom, darting past the tapestries, and towards the outside world.

The Overking looks stunned.
"Ah, Prytanis, it appears the circumstances of your trial have evenly split the justiciars. It now falls to me to cast the final vote. This... does not happen often. I wish it did not come to this, but it has. But I think I know how I shall vote."
The Overking takes a deep breath in.
"Are you ready?"

The Overking shakes his head and sighs.
"I'm sorry, but a majority of the justiciars have found you guilty. You are convicted of crimes against the state of Araxthia and the Eternal City, and are hereby sentenced to death, as is prescribed for such matters. May your soul find peace."
It is hard to tell, but the Overking seems saddened by this outcome. Whatever the case, you are clasped by guards, who shunt you away into the depths of the Tower, to some dark cell, where you await your end.
[[Your Fate->Execution]](text-colour:green)[''Innocent!'']
The Overking nods at you and smiles.
"I suppose it is a good thing that it fell to me, for I was very much moved by your final statement. I think you've shown appropriate contrition, and a care for your fellow citizens. As such, I vote you innocent. All charges against you are to be stricken from the record. You are free to go about your business, and return to your position as Prytanis of Gatebridge. "I'm sorry, but I must vote you guilty. I did not want to do this, but your final statement left me deeply concerned about whether you actually learned anything from these proceedings. You showed no contrition, and disrespected this court of your fellow citizens. Thus, you are convicted of crimes against the state of Araxthia and the Eternal City, and are hereby sentenced to death, as is prescribed for such matters. May your soul find peace."
The Overking turns away from you, and you are clasped by guards, who shunt you away into the depths of the Tower, to some dark cell, where you await your end.

You sit in your cell for a day, or maybe two- it's hard to tell. Archon the Mage comes to meet with you at one point, and informs you that your possessions will be consigned to the poor after your execution. You suppose that provides you with some sense of comfort.
On the day of your execution, you are brought from your cell to a platform in a central square of the city. No crowd has come- such displays shame the people of the kingdom. You think you spot Cyrus on the edge of the square, but it's hard to tell. A mage says a quiet prayer wishing your soul swift travels, before placing a single finger on your forehead.
Quickly, painlessly, it is over.
[[Thus Ends Your Journey->Title Card]] (text-colour:magenta)[''A Sapphic Ending'']
You emerge from the Tower, right into the waiting embrace of Sappho.
"Oh goodness, I'm so happy for you! I'm just glad I could do my little part."
You feel the weight that has pressed down upon you since this matter began dissipate. You allow yourself to relax, warmed by Sappho's affection. Once she is done hugging you, Sappho clasps your hand, and the two of you walk away from the Tower.
Where you two will go from here is yet to be decided, although Sappho expresses an enthusiasm for seeing Gatebridge. Wherever you may go, it will be together.

You are relieved to take in the fresh air again, knowing it as a free woman. It was quite the ordeal, but you're through it, alive, intact, position secure. You look out at the Eternal City- bustling, brimming with the potential for adventure. But, that's not for you. Best to leave ahead, and make your way back to Gatebridge. It's not a small town, but it feels practically provincial compared to this place.
Perhaps that's a good thing.

As you emerge from the tower, your freedom assured, you are greeted by Cyrus, who gives you a large hug.
“Congratulations, Ianthe! I’ve been looking forward to our drink, and I’m sure you probably could use one after that debacle, ha!” Cyrus proclaims. You take comfort in his company, and allow him to guide you away from the Tower, towards his favorite bar.
Cyrus is a stabilizing presence in your life, with his strong sense of right and wrong. It marks a break from the uncertainty that surrounded matters before the trial, and that is a welcome change. You're unsure of where things will go from here, but you know they will be good.

As you emerge from the tower, your freedom assured, you are greeted by Cyrus, who gives you a large hug.
“Congratulations, Ianthe! I’ve been looking forward to our drink, and I’m sure you probably could use one after that debacle, ha!” Cyrus proclaims rather loudly. At this, there is a loud gasp behind you. You whirl around to see Sappho staring at you and Cyrus, her mouth agape.
“I- I-... I can’t believe this. You //used// me! Played me like some sort of children’s instrument. How //dare// you! I put my reputation on the line for you, and this is how you repay me? Your honeyed words, your flirtations… all foul poison!” Sappho cries out, before storming away, tears already streaming down her face. You start after her, but Cyrus stops you with a firm hand on your shoulder.
“Is this true, Ianthe? You used my feelings to your advantage, as you did with Sappho? No, you don’t need to answer, I can see it in your eyes,” Cyrus says, his shoulders sagging. He lets go of you and takes a step back.
“I’m not as fragile as Sappho, but I won’t say I’m not hurt. I don’t regret my testimony, but I think it’s best if you returned to Gatebridge, Prytanis. Without me,” Cyrus declares, turning away from you.
With that, all that remains is your return to Gatebridge. Your actions have assured that while you have been found innocent, you are no longer wanted here. Nothing is left for you in the Eternal City.

You traverse the bustling streets to the Araxthian College of Magic, which would be a modest structure were it not constructed from glittering crystal. Some young students point you in the direction of the Chief Rector's office, and soon you are sitting before Sappho's desk. Clad in a red cloak that conveys her position of authority in the university, she addresses you in a tone that you can tell she saves for particularly misguided students:
"Madame Prytanis, I don't think you quite grasp the nuances of what we do here at the College. There is a reason why this sort of structured environment is necessary for those wholly new to magic."
